The Barnard B7 is a South African built Hyper car, built here in Bloemfontein.
A man named Barnard wanted to give racing car enthusiasts and driving devotees the opportunity to own a car that was inspired by Le Mans Prototype 1 (LMP 1) racing cars. It had to be a good car but be available at a fraction of the price of an LMP 1. Not that LMPs are generally for sale, of course! In 2002 Barnard officially started design and construction. Five years later the Barnard 101 drove out of its incubator. These cars are designed to be driven enthusiastically and to appeal to the senses of the performance aficionado. It is meant to be enjoyed on the racetrack.
The Barnard is not endowed with electronic aids that flatter the driver. It doesn't have vacuum-assisted brakes or anti-lock assistance. It doesn't have traction control. This is all up to the driver. What it does have is a monocoque chassis which combines exceptional strength with light weight.
The Barnard is uncompromising in that it requires a higher level of involvement of the driver than conventional sports cars that are produced commercially and in great numbers. When potential customers examine the Barnard closely, they will realise that it is designed to offer not only a very special motoring experience, but also exceptional quality.
I was contacted by one of my Clients who had managed to get his hands on one of the Three Proto Type models and asked if I wanted to market the car on his behalf. There was absolutely no hesitation and I jumped in my car and headed down to his home to view the car. I had read and heard about the cars but had never seen one in life. When I walked into his garage I could not believe actually how big the car was and the attention to detail of the build quality of the car.
The car that I was commissioned to market was car number 2 of the 3 Proto Types built. Car number 1 and 3 are still owned by the car builders. The car had been used as the launch car and had travelled the World Attending various Launches. If you Google the Barnard B7 you will find every media write up that there is and it is about this exact car.
The car is based on the Lola L28 LMP2 race car that Lola cancelled before production was started due to lack of funds. Chris Barnard purchased bought the plans, design rights and all the accompanying documentation for the project. He went ahead and designed his own car the Barnard using the Best design technologies from the Lola project and then from a number of other LMP2 designed cars. Hence the Barnard B7 came into being.
I have kept in contact with the new owner who can’t express how every time he starts the car never mind driving it is an experience unto hold. This is a truly very Special South Africa Car which just make me think of all the other one off South African Cars the countries designed , mechanics and engineers have produced or modified over the years. A few that come to mind Birkin, Bailey Edwards GT40 Replica’s, Back Draft Racing, Ford Capri and Grenada Perana’s , Chevy Firenza Can Am , Ford Cortina XR6 Interceptor , Sapphire Cosworth , Opel Kadett Super Boss , BMW M5 E28,745I E23,333i E30 , 325is E30, Noble N400 and the famous Alfa GTV 3,0 Liter V6.
