Mercedes Benz SL500 (R129) 1995 Model

SOLD

In one form or another, Mercedes-Benz has been producing a two-seat sporty convertible since 1954 under the SL-Class moniker (SL standing for “Sport Leicht,” or “Sport Lightweight” in English). The cars have always been popular standard bearers, and have combined sporty touring qualities with comfort and quality. The R129 version of the Mercedes-Benz SL is no exception.

For the 1990 model year, Mercedes had prepared a replacement for the R107 design that had served the SL-Class since 1972. The new R129 design received a state-of-the-art adjustable sport-luxury suspension and an all-new chassis. Twin A-arm front and fully independent multi-link rear suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, and a complete unibody chassis defined the new SL. Safety features included an automatic roll bar that was designed to extend in the event of a rollover accident. All SL-Class cars in this era were delivered with a cloth convertible top and a removable aluminium hardtop.

The R129 received heightened media attention in Great Britain in 1991 when Diana, Princess of Wales sold her Jaguar XJS to lease a metallic-red 500 SL and became the first member of the royal family to use a foreign car. This was not without controversy as it sparked a media storm as it questioned whether a member of the British royal family should drive a foreign car. Media pressure eventually forced her to return the car to Mercedes-Benz in 1992, with whom it now resides in the Mercedes-Benz Museum.

“Car Design Award”

Hardly a year after its launch the SL was decorated with the international Car Design Award. The SL was the top choice of an eleven-member jury of journalists from ten countries, assisted by a representative of the city of Turin and one from the Piedmont region. The jury stated as reason for the award: “In the Mercedes-Benz 300 – 500 SL the ensemble of safety innovations …, exemplary ergonomic solutions, and stringent adherence to the traditional design culture of the manufacturer’s brand is convincing. The new SL embodies the most valuable elements of up-to-date industrial design, without losing the flair that distinguishes every sports cabriolet.”

A driver of an SL makes a statement: it’s like travelling in assured style in an elegant, well-tailored suit. That the car is extremely comfortable and makes even long journeys pleasant is simply taken for granted – and enjoyed every kilometer of the way

This near perfect and immaculate example that we have for sale has a mere 130000km and comes with all the Original owners’ manuals, radio manuals and a Full Service History. The automatic folding soft top opens and closes within 30 seconds at the push of a button. The car is also accompanied by its original aluminium hard top as well. The interior is just about perfect and makes one wonder how the car has even got to the mileage is has without anyone sitting in the vehicle.

A Mercedes-Benz SL in the R 129 series is the ideal modern classic – individual, but fully suitable for everyday use, and at the same time rising in value.
