In late 1967, the second generation of the Volkswagen Type 2 (T2) was introduced. It was built in Germany until 1979.The Bay Window Bus was quite different from its predecessor, many felt that it had lost some of the character of the previous model. However, many refinements were added.
This second-generation Type 2 lost its distinctive split front windshield, and was designed to be easier to produce using the advances in mechanised production.
The 1971 Type 2 featured front disc brakes and new road wheels with brake ventilation holes and flatter hubcaps. Up until 1972, front indicators were set low on the nose rather than high on either side of the fresh air grille – giving rise to their being nicknamed "Low Lights".
Like the Beetle, from the beginning, the Type 2 earned many nicknames from its fans. Among the most popular at least in Germany, are VW-Bus and Bulli (or Bully) or Hippie-van or the bus. The Type 2 was meant to be officially named the Bully, but Heinrich Lanz, producer of the Lanz Bulldog farm tractor, intervened. The official German-language model names were the Transporter and Kombi.
It was called a Volksie Bus in South Africa, notable in a series of that country's TV commercials. Kombi is also a generic nickname for vans and minibuses in South Africa, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe, often used as a means of public transportation.
The VW Type 2 became popular with the Counterculture of the 1960s, Vans were often painted with extravagant designs in bright colours, making them to stand out on the road even more. The "hippie van" remains iconic today, thanks to being featured on the cover of albums by musicians such as Bob Dylan and the Beach Boys and being used by the Grateful Dead while touring. But most iconic of all, the music festival Woodstock, which was held in the summer of 1969, saw Plenty of brightly-painted vans transporting excited young crowds.
Whilst the Bus that we have on offer has been made to look like a 70”s Surfing Culture example it still retains many of the original features of the 1971 Delux model which was the only version to come with two interior lights, a folding out floor board when the side door was open for ease of access and the chrome beading along the sides of the vehicle.
The motor has been upgraded to a newer 2,0 litre giving the vehicle ample power to cruise the open roads at a comfortable speed of 120kmh.Webber 36mm down draft carbs have been fitted with a Monza free flow exhaust system. The addition of disc brakes have been added to the rear. A MP4 quick shifter has been fitted to the original 4 speed gear box.17 inch Fuchs wheels adjourn the bus however the standard original wheel and hubcaps accompany the sale. All the window rubbers, door rubbers are brand new. The vehicle has been professionally resprayed and is 100 % rust free. The interior and carpet are all brand new and blend in perfectly with the retro look of the period.
This Retro look Kombi comes with the surf boards, roof rack, standard rims and hubcaps and a tow bar.
Their ‘Kombi’ nature encourages individuality, and most will have been altered in some way. Engine upgrades, either with later VW engines, or even Porsche and Subaru units are also common, as are LPG conversions. Interior upgrades and conversions are also very widespread.
