BMW 745i E23 1984 Model

US$0,00

The BMW 745i E23 SA development project was the most advanced engineering exercise ever undertaken by BMW SA – the first tangible result of a major expansion in the local company’s development capacity which involved the transfer of more than 50 German engineers and technicians from Munich to Rosslyn. It was also the product of a personal enthusiasm on the part of Dr Eberhard von Koerber, the previous managing director of BMW SA.

The South Africa 745i model was powered by the naturally aspirated M88/3 engine, instead of the turbocharged M102/M106 engines of the European 745i. A right-hand-drive version of the turbocharged model was not possible due to the turbocharger being in the right-hand side of the engine bay. Instead, the 745i was fitted with the 210 kW (280 hp; 290 PS) M88/3 engine, as used in the E24 M635i and E28 M5. The engine uses a 24-valve DOHC valvetrain and the fuel injection system is a Bosch ML-Jetronic.

A production run of 209 South African 745i was built from 1983 to 1987, 192 of which were with an automatic gearbox and 17 with a 5-speed manual gearbox.

BMW South Africa entered one of these 745i models in Class A of the South African Modified Saloon Car Championship The 745i won the championship in 1985, the only BMW-Sanctioned motorsport application in the history of BMW 7 Series cars.

The example that we have for sale has had a complete nut and bolt and mechanical restoration by BMW. The body was restored by a BMW approved repair centre in the original colour. The interior and carpets are all brand new. The mechanical restoration was done only using brand new BMW parts and was done by JSN Motors.

Buff, hand-stitched leather was used to recreate it perfectly with all the flair that the car was manufactured with. All the electronics are perfect, the adjustable front seats have three “memory” settings. The twin halogen headlights facilitate fast night driving. The engine bay is superb – meticulously planned to avoid clutter despite the complexity of the computer-managed machinery.

Relieved by the beige panelling and carpet, it combines traditional craftsmanship with sound modem design to give a. spacious, restful effect.

Distinctive it surely is, for there are few cars in the world that combine such effortless, scintillating performance with such roomy and refined comfort.

On the road, the car is breath-taking – a word we reserve for rare occasions.

It’s unclear exactly how many of the 249 remain today, although expert and former BMW SA employee, Marek Letowt, reckons on there being only 20 survivors in total
