The BMW E23 was the first generation of the BMW 7 Series luxury cars, and was produced from 1977 to 1987. Strategically, it was an important car. This was the first time that BMW had demonstrated the confidence to truly challenge the Mercedes S Class head on with a luxury saloon of comparable ambition. The 7 Series changed that perception, carefully shifting the emphasis towards refinement and luxury but without sacrificing driver appeal.

The new BMW 7 Series joined the 3, 5 and 6 Series ranges, which gave BMW a complete model family whose various members were instantly recognisable as being “related” thanks to their similar, yet distinctive, designs. “Visual and technical unity is now assured across all the model series,” is how Hans-Erdmann Schönbeck, the sales director of the time, put it. “The BMW models are now indisputably a ‘family’ once more with many shared features.”

Separate, electrically adjustable rear seats were among the more exotic options and, later, the 7 Series would pioneer heated door locks, rear sunblind’s and in-car phones. More importantly, anti-lock brakes made their BMW debut on the E23 in ’78.

By the time the E23 series was discontinued in June 1986, production figures had hit 285,029. The most popular model was the 728i, which sold 70,360 times, followed by the 735i with sales of 60,818. A total of 16,848 BMW 7 Series alone went to South Africa as CKD kits

The front seat were so expertly recovered you can’t tell the difference between then and the original rear ones. The dash, wood panelling, carpets roof linings are all perfect and original. All the electrics are in perfect working order. A front BBS Spoiler has been fitted however the original front valence comes with the car.

The car has the original medical kit, tools, jack, wheel spanner full set of books and a complete detailed service history.

Luxury saloons often do lower mileages than other cars due to the limited time that executives spend travelling in their vehicles. Generally, they are serviced regularly and kept garaged both at home and at the workplace. This may, in some way, compensate for any apprehension involved in buying such a complex piece of machinery.
