The GS took 14 years to develop from initial design to launch in August 1970 and celebrated is 50th Birthday in August 2020. The GS filled the gap in Citroën's range, between the 2CV and the luxurious DS executive sedan. Citroen proved that clever and ingenious engineering solutions could result in a car that lifted the expectations of its buyers, and hurry-up its rivals into building cars that could match its high standards of comfort, performance, space, and dynamics.
The GS was styled by Robert Opron and was noted for its aerodynamic body shape with a drag coefficient of 0.318, fully independent hydro-pneumatic brakes and self-levelling suspension and air-cooled flat-four engine. Quite legitimately, the GS could claim to be the most advanced medium saloon in the world.
Citroen proved that clever and ingenious engineering solutions could result in a car that lifted the expectations of its buyers, and hurry-up its rivals into building cars that could match its high standards of comfort, performance, space, and dynamics.
In 1973 the GS 1220 went into local production at Citroën South Africa’s facility located in Pretoria. The car proved to be extremely popular and became Known affectionately as "the little Citroën", around 19,382 units were built, the last being sold in 1980.
The GS was named the European Car of the Year in 1971, the design was noted as technologically advanced, with class leading comfort, safety, and aerodynamics.
Why pick the GS over the more mainstream competition? Simple: its advanced construction and unrivalled ride comfort. The example that we have for sale is a 1974 model which was locally assembled and was also the first year the GS’s radio was placed in between the seats within a center console, adjacent to the radio is a suspension height adjustment lever, the hand brake was located on the dashboard, and it had a floor mounted gear lever. The car comes out of a Citroen collection and has covered a mere 79000km from new. The interior is in perfect condition showing basically no signs of aging. The body is in excellent condition along with the chrome fittings that look the same as way back in 1974.
The suspension is in good working order. all components function as they should, and all the ride heights are correct. This car can only be described as nearly new in all aspects.
The GS is a car that loves to be driven…and the feel of performance you get out of the 1.2-litre engine is a lot stronger than the 60 horsepower its specification says. I think the GS is even more fascinating than the larger DS and SM—because, like the 2CV, the GS was a “people’s car” that drove as well as the very best cars of its era.
The phrase “It’s only original once” and that’s what this car is!!!
