The Datsun 1200 is representative of so many two-door sedans of its type built all over the world from the twenties through to the seventies. Datsun 1200s were produced and sold locally in South Africa from 1972 to 1975 in 4-door sedans and GX Coupes. (with twin SUs).
A Coupe can be briefly seen in the 1980 movie The Gods Must Be Crazy.
The South African GX used the facelift parts offered for the Japanese market which included new taillights, front grille and trim on the 4-door sedan and new dash and interiors on both the Coupe and four door Sedan. South Africa was also the only country outside Japan that sold B110 GX cars. The GX5 was not sold in South Africa.
South Africa GXs were unique in respect to having front and rear reflectors and 'Datsun' rear and side emblems (Japan Datsun 1200 GX had 'Sunny' badges)
The example that we have started out life as a basic Datsun 1200 that was sold in the UK before making its way to Zimbabwe and finally to South Africa hence the 2-door sedan configuration. But that is exactly where its life ended, and its new existence started.
The car was and is the vision of a Lifelong Datsun enthusiast and prolific collector of the famous brand. “What would the world say to a R/H Datsun GX 2 door sedan?”
For the project to be a success two GX four door sedans were purchased to get most of the parts transferred onto the two-door car.
The car was stripped to bare metal and the and the restoration began. The body and all the mechanical items went through a full restoration process to be in concourse condition.
Straight body panels, perfect paint, trim pieces like the grille, door handles, wiper arms, side mirrors, etc. look downright perfect. Moving to the interior, it looks about as flawless as the exterior.
We can write a book on the restoration process however to summarize the build every single conceivable part from the GX’s were transformed, restored, and fitted onto the little two door sedan.
The attention to detail in the project cannot be described from the engine, gearbox, brakes, rear suspension interior, trimming, fuel lines, brake lines, clamps, nuts bolts ect…ect…ect… are all GX.
All we can say is ATTENTION TO DETAIL, ATTENTION TO DETAIL, ATTENTION TO DETAIL.
