More exotic than a Beetle, the Karmann Ghia has become a cult hit and is a sought-after classic today.
In the context of today’s automotive market, the idea of creating a stylish-looking sports car without the performance to match its exotic looks does not seem that unreasonable.
The combination of almost voluptuous Italian styling, solid construction and durable components from the rear-engine Volkswagen Beetle gave the Karmann-Ghia a winning combination.
There are a few reasons for jumping behind the wheel of a Karmann Ghia. There is no mistaking the aesthetic beauty of the body, styled by Ghia of Turin and there is also the benefit of Volkswagen reliability.
Lastly, for those who like to stand out, or even draw a crowd the Karmann Ghia is exclusive when compared to its all-conquering Beetle. Even at large events, there are only ever a handful on display.
Despite a production run spanning nearly twenty years in which almost half a million were built, prices have been appreciating at a rate of 17% per annum. This is due to the fact that there were no real big changes made to the Ghia during its lifetime, with all the improvements stemming from a slow and deliberate evolution in keeping with VW culture of the day.
