While the Lancia Fulvia seems to be forgotten by many, the stylish saloon and more sought-after coupe were extremely advanced cars for their time.
Many carmakers stand out in the collective memory of vintage auto enthusiasts as having built exceptionally well-engineered cars. Porsche and Lotus, for instance, each built car not just with passion but also with mathematical precision and distinct purpose. One of the best-engineered marques of automotive history has often been forgotten, though.
The name of this carmaker, once Italy's most technically advanced brand, is Lancia.
It was the carmaker that made pioneering advances in technologies that have today become ubiquitous, including the 'V' engine configuration and unitized body construction. It was the carmaker so concerned with building cars to its own high standards that it ignored the principles of cost-effectiveness and doomed itself to financial ruin and a takeover by Fiat. It was the carmaker that, even under Fiat's control, realized sparkling rally success.
The Fulvia was introduced during the 1963 Geneva Motor Show as a replacement for the Lancia Appia and would mark the final application of Lancia's line of narrow-angle V-4 engines that were mounted at a 45 degree angle in front of the transaxle. The Fulvia was a front-wheel-drive, four-speed car, as opposed to its predecessor, the Appia, being a rear-wheel-drive car. It is best known for its impact in racing history with a notable win during the 1972 International Rally Championship.
And a look at the roll call of Fulvia drivers: Ove Andersson, Sandro Munari, Vic Elford, Pauli Toivonen, Pat Moss, Réné Trautmann, Harry Källström, Leo Cella, Rauno Aaltonen and Simo Lampinen are the highlights of one of the most illustrious lists in rallying history.
