S and L: two letters that tell the world you have made it. There have been seven generations of the Mercedes-Benz convertible, each as impressive as the other. The R129 generation was in production for a full 12 years from 1989 to 2001, and for drivers of a certain age, it sticks in the memory. Why? Bruno Sacco’s styling for a start, and then there were the engines, the advanced technology and the sheer driving experience that together propelled this legendary car into the modern age.
Princess Diana’s choice in motors is the most memorable among R129 owners. In 1991, having tired of her stately Jaguar XJS, the People’s Princess traded it in for something new. Her choice sparked outcry, for it was the first time a British royal had not opted for a British car. What is more, it was German.
It was also, notably, the first Mercedes-Benz to be officially offered as an AMG version.
The secret to the SL's appeal in Hollywood during the 1990s was the same formula that endures today. It delivers understated German luxury, reliable powertrains shared with the S-Class sedan. A standard electronically operated canvas top, and an externally fitted hardtop make the car as weather tight as a coupe. During an era when exotic cars were comparatively thin on the ground, the SL was the most practical and easiest-to-drive sporting automobile you could buy.
