Mercedes Benz R129 SL600 1993 Model

A smooth-running 12-cylinder powered the R129 with jet-like thrust

The very same engine found in the first Pagani Zonda.

If you had to pick one convertible to represent the 1990s, the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class would be the favorite based on its pop-culture profile alone. Remember Clint Eastwood and Charlie Sheen fearlessly driving a Mercedes SL through a couple of warehouse windows in "The Rookie" (1990), with all parties apparently emerging unscathed. In Hollywood during the 1990s, if you wanted a top-dollar convertible with equal parts performance, prestige, and engineering excellence, there was the Mercedes-Benz SL, and then everything else. Even today, the SL is a fixture in the movie business, the choice of aspiring screenwriters on the way up.

The R129 SL was the perfect platform for the powerful 5.9-liter 12-cylinder. The car boasted contemporary styling, sturdy construction, smooth road holding and numerous built-in safety features. The clean-sheet design was first revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1989 and response from the public and press was overwhelmingly positive, leading to years of success on showroom floors.

Retired Mercedes-Benz design chief Bruno Sacco counted the R129 among his team's greatest accomplishments.

The new R129 boasted several safety advancements as well, including an automatic roll bar that automatically snapped upright in the event of a rollover. The SL's seats also represented an advancement in safety with their five-piece frames die-cast of a special magnesium alloy that lent them exceptional rigidity in the event of a side-impact accident.
