Subaru has a long history of offering vehicles that are both highly capable and intelligently designed. While the Japanese carmaker first entered the automotive world in 1954. The Subaru Star came a little later in 1970.

The car that elevated Subaru was the Impreza WRX. Subaru adopted the name "WRX" to stand for "World Rally “eXperimental" as all WRX versions (1992 to present) feature rally inspired technology, including all wheel drive, stiffened suspensions and turbocharged four-cylinder engines. This all backed by its six FIA World Rally Championship titles (three constructors titles and three drivers’ titles) and its 46 outright rally wins a record only ever achieved by the Lancia Intergrale.

In 1994 Subaru released the WRX and STI versions with different handling packages and power outputs off a motor with a 2,0-litre turbo motor.

This is where the South African STI story began. After being started by a band of “Scoobie” fanatics Subaru SA was under a corporate umbrella with a bunch of executives keen to show case the Brand. After countless trips to Japan and endless pleading they eventually secured 17 STI cars for South Africa in November 2001.

There were model updates in 2002 followed by a second update in 2005 introduced the ‘jet intake’’ and wings grille design (Hawkeye) and a more responsive and powerful 2,5 litre motor.

SUBARU’s STi is an icon. A legend. Years from now it will be remembered in the same way as past heroes, such as the first Golf GTi, Renault Gordini and original Mini Cooper. But unlike these cars, the STi shows no sign of fading away, or growing up. Every year it becomes faster. Wilder. Crazier. You can thank Subaru for that, for this is a very stubborn company that seems to completely ignore automotive fashion, and fiddles instead with the bits that make a car more exciting to drive.
