In 1974, Triumph broke with tradition and launched its wedge-shaped TR7 sports cars. The advert claimed it was ‘The shape of things to come’, Codenamed Project Bullet, with quite a bit of thought going into the project. Two top British Leyland engineers had travelled to the United States to meet with their counter parts, almost all of them said that mechanical simplicity was essential. Austin Morris design boss Harris Mann, on the other hand, had the ideal clean sheet of paper and set about creating a more dramatic sports car with American tastes in mind. The decidedly rakish angle of his car’s windscreen was designed to allow the driver to see America’s overhanging traffic lights, for example.
The eagerly awaited convertible was introduced in early 1979, with right-hand drive deliveries beginning in early 1980.As a classic today, the TR7 really comes into its own: parts support is simply superb thanks to the specialists and there’s precious little you can’t obtain. As for the choice of model, it’s no surprise to learn that the elegant convertible has survived in greater numbers than the coupe
What’s more an iconic wedge-haired Joanna Lumley drove one in popular seventies action series The New Avengers . Whatever you think of the design now, the TR7’s rakish modernism must have looked refreshing on the stolid streets of seventies Britain.
The TR7 has the distinction of being the last car to be developed independently by Triumph.
The example that we have for sale was built on 7th April 1981 at British Leyland Canley plant U.K. The car has undergone a complete restoration using band new Triumph components & fittings imported ex Triumph agents UK. The signature tartan seat and door trimmings along with blue soft top , full tonneau cover and blue soft top cover were all imported. The attention to detail in the restoration really must be commended, this is one near perfect TR7 which is also registered with Triumph Club of South Africa.
After a slow start, the Triumph TR7 is appreciated these days as perhaps the best driving and the most affordable of all the TRs.
